Glen Abernethy, Great Slave

Family status: Married (Carolyn Smith)

Age: 44

Residence: 4403 School Draw Ave, Yk, NT (in the Great Slave Riding)

Education: Diploma in Business Administration (Mount Royal College)

Experience: I have served as the MLA for Great Slave since the 16th Legislative Assembly (2 terms, 8 years). I have been a member of the Executive Council for the 17th Legislative Assembly (4 years) and held the portfolios of Health & Social Services, Justice, Public Works & Services and Human Resources. In addition, I was the minister responsible for the Public Utilities Board, the minister responsible for Seniors and the minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities.

Before becoming an MLA I worked in human resources for the GNWT, where I was responsible for recruitment and retention of health professionals including nurses, doctors, social workers and all other allied health professionals employed in the NWT.

Why I'm running:

As a life long northerner I am committed to the North and want to see it grow into a prosperous, vibrant, culturally rich region with opportunities for anyone who wants them.  The next Legislative Assembly faces a number of important challenges: a tight fiscal outlook for the GNWT, limited economic activity, and an increased cost of living.

I want to take everything I have learned and experienced over my years as resident, employee, MLA and Minister and return as the MLA for Great Slave to address these issues and help support a strong and resilient NWT for all people.
